Fujifilm XH2 Review & First Impressions

camera reviews Aug 20, 2023

Introduction

Switching to an APS-C system from a full-frame camera seemed unlikely for me due to the perceived quality gap. But with the arrival of Fujifilm's XT3, followed by GFX50-s, I was smitten by Fujifilm colors, leading me to explore the new XH2. In this post, I will provide an in-depth analysis of the XH2, explaining why it has become an integral part of my photography toolkit.

Ergonomics and Build Quality

The XH2 filled the ergonomic void that was left by XT3 and 4 for a full-time wedding photographer. With its magnesium alloy body, weather sealing, and slightly larger build, it sits comfortably in hand. Physical controls like the dedicated ISO button, shutter speed dial, and mode dial enhance its user-friendliness, marking it as an efficient tool for photographers.

Image Quality

Boasting a 40MP APS-C sensor, the XH2 churns out images rich in detail and color. The X-Trans 5 Sensor ensures high-quality imagery despite the smaller sensor, promising better low light performance. Its lightweight build is a huge benefit, especially when paired with a GFX100s, enabling a perfect balance of quality and convenience on a wedding day.

Autofocus and Performance

The updated Autofocus system is fast, accurate, and tracks swiftly, even in low light. Being on par with the best Canon system, Fujifilm's new AF eliminates its previous shortcomings. Continuous focus mode ensures that fast-moving subjects are captured effortlessly.

Video Capabilities

Able to record in 8K at 30fps or 4K at 60fps, the XH2 excels in video quality too. Its superb autofocus system adds to the overall efficiency, making it an excellent choice for videography.

Conclusion

The XH2 is a commendable addition to Fujifilm's line, integrating quality, speed, and accuracy in varied environments. Over the past 6 months, I've found myself gravitating towards Fujifilm over Canon, particularly for its color and aesthetic. A more detailed comparison is reserved for a future exploration, but for now, the XH2 has certainly impressed me and fits seamlessly into my work as a wedding photographer.

Thank you for exploring my first impressions of the Fujifilm XH2. Stay tuned for more insights, and catch you in the next post.
